Pronunciation Doesn't Matter; The Important Thing is to Communicate
I'm Andrea Álvarez, I specialize in digital marketing and communication. I'm from Nicaragua, a Central American country. In my free time I love swimming and playing chess. I admire Emma's work, for finding the most information about the Spanish speaking world and communicating it in English speaking homes, so that you know more about our cultures, customs, and our language!
Spanish is a very diverse language, there are linguistic varieties. Nicaraguans as in any country, we have our regionalisms and sometimes they have no meaning in English, like "ideay" which means "and then," "Prix" which is "friend," or "Fachento" which is like a conceited person.
Even with our regionalisms we can understand each other in our own country, however, there are regionalisms in our neighboring countries and sometimes we do not understand them and we feel uncomfortable. The same thing happens with English, when we do not master it and we meet people who only speak English, we do not know how to develop a conversation, in my country this happens a lot, because there is a fragmentation, since on the Atlantic coast, inhabitants speak English, and in the other part it is a privilege to learn English. When someone from the Atlantic coast comes to the capital, it is difficult to communicate because there are few people who speak English. And if a person from the capital or the Pacific of Nicaragua goes to the Atlantic, he/she will not be able to communicate well because of the language barrier that exists.
My first experience in which I felt that English was important was when I was 12 years old and I went on a trip to an international chess competition. There were many children from all over Central America and most of the countries in Central America speak Spanish, but those from Belize speak English. I remember that I wanted to talk to the children from Belize, but they and I could not understand each other. Unfortunately I could not be friends with them and they could not relate with the other children from the Spanish speaking countries. I felt a little sad, but a year later I started to learn English and thanks to this I have been able to meet incredible people who have been able to share their friendship and learn about their customs.

Recently I was asking myself the question if two languages can save your physical or emotional health, or how can we help someone who speaks a different language than us. Maybe if it is something physical, we can show it with a gesture (if it is something we can see). But what happens when our mental health is bad, since last year, our mental health has been vulnerable because things have changed with the pandemic and many people have needed psychological help or just talking to people from other places. What happens when you are in a country where they don't speak your native language? We can feel vulnerable not being able to communicate how we feel.
Among other advantages is the freedom learning a language gives you to find valuable information that sometimes is only in English, because that has happened to me when studying marketing. Most of the information is in English and I feel that I have been able to take advantage of the wise advice of the books in English. Recently I was talking to my speech teacher and she emphasized the same thing that the best books to give a good speech were in English. The value of being able to learn and keep the most accurate information that we seek for ourselves does not compare to anything, it is a great satisfaction.

To learn English or Spanish, we don't necessarily need to go to an institute. I remember one of the first times I became interested in English was when I listened to Beatles songs and learned the pronunciation of the words in the songs without knowing what they meant. Getting our ear used to another language could be one of the first steps. In these times of technology there are a lot of platforms that can help us learn a language to expand our knowledge. In high schools they teach us the basics of communication, but if we do not put into practice speaking with other people the language we are learning, we will not advance. It doesn't matter if our pronunciation is not perfect, the important thing is to communicate.
Another thing I can say is that it is fun to learn a new language as a family. Especially when we are all trying to do our best and correct each other or make challenges to learn at least 10 words per day. This really makes it such a fun way to learn.

El español es un idioma muy diverso, existen variedades lingüísticas. Los nicaragüenses como en cualquier país, tenemos nuestros regionalismos y a veces no tienen significado en inglés, como ideay que es “y entonces”, Prix que es amigo o Fachento que es como una persona presumida. con nuestros regionalismos nos podemos entender, en nuestro propio país, hay regionalismos en nuestros países vecinos y nosotros a veces no los entendemos y nos sentimos incómodos. Eso mismo pasa con el inglés, cuando no lo dominamos y nos encontramos con personas que solo hablan inglés, no sabemos cómo desarrollar una conversación, en mi país pasa mucho esto, porque hay una fragmentación, ya que en la costa atlántica sus habitantes hablan inglés y en la otra parte el inglés es un privilegio aprenderlo, cuando alguien de la costa atlántica viene a la capital, comunicarse se le hace difícil ya que son pocas las personas que manejan el inglés y si una persona de la capital o el pacifico de nicaragua va al atlántico posiblemente no se va a poder comunicar bien por la barrera del idioma que existe.

Mi primera experiencia en la que sentí que el inglés era importante, fue cuando tenía 12 años y fui a un viaje de una competencia internacional de ajedrez y habian muchos niños de toda centroamérica y la mayoría de países en centroamérica hablamos español, pero los de belice hablan inglés, recuerdo que yo quería hablar con los niños de belice, pero ellos, ni yo nos podíamos comprender, lamentablemente no pude ser amiga de ellos y ellos no se pudieron relacionar con los demás niños de los países de habla hispana. Me sentí un poco triste, pero un año después empecé a aprender inglés y gracias a esto he podido conocer gente increíble y que me ha podido compartir su amistad y aprender sobre sus costumbres. Hace poco me hacía la pregunta a mi misma de que si dos idiomas pueden salvar tu salud física o emocional o Cómo podríamos ayudar a alguien que habla un idioma diferente al de nosotros. Tal vez si es algo físico nos puede mostrar con un gesto (Si es algo que podemos ver). Pero qué pasa cuando nuestra salud mental está mal, desde el año pasado, nuestra salud mental se ha visto vulnerable porque las cosas cambiaron con la pandemia y muchas personas han necesitado ayuda psicológica o solo hablar con personas de otros lugares, pero qué pasa cuando te encuentras en un país donde no hablan tu lengua natal. Nos podemos sentir vulnerables al no poder comunicarnos cómo nos sentimos.

Entre otras ventajas es la libertad que te da al encontrar información valiosa que a veces solo está en inglés, porque eso me ha pasado, al estudiar marketing la mayoría de información se encuentra en inglés y siento que he podido aprovechar los sabios consejos de los libros en inglés. Hace poco hablaba con mi profesora de speech y me recalco lo mismo de que los mejores libros para dar un buen discurso estaban en inglés, lo valioso de poder aprender y guardar lo más acertado que buscamos de la información por nosotros mismos no se compara con nada, es una gran satisfacción.
Para aprender inglés o español, no necesariamente necesitamos ir a un instituto. Recuerdo que unas de las primeras veces que me interesó el inglés fue cuando escuchaba canciones de los Beatles y me aprendía la pronunciación de las palabras de las canciones sin saber que significaban. Acostumbrar nuestro oído a otro idioma podría ser uno de los primeros pasos, en estos tiempos de tecnología hay un montón de plataformas que nos pueden ayudar a aprender un idioma para ampliar nuestro conocimiento. En los institutos nos enseñan lo principal para comunicarnos, pero si nosotros no ponemos en práctica hablando con otras personas el idioma que estamos aprendiendo, no avanzaremos. No importa si nuestra pronunciación no es perfecta, lo importante es comunicarnos.
Otras de las cosas que puedo decir es que es divertido aprender un nuevo idioma en familia, ya que todos estamos intentando dar lo mejor y corregirnos entre nosotros mismo o hacer retos de aprendernos al menos 10 palabras por días, para que sea una forma divertida de aprender.
